The Cerrado is a vast tropical savanna ecoregion that spreads across the very heart of the Brazilian territory, accounting for a full 21% of the country’s land area. It has been named the biologically richest savanna in the world by the World Wide Fund for Nature, due to its enormous ranges of plant and animal biodiversity: about 10,000 plant species, 800 bird species, and nearly 200 species of mammals. Giant anteaters, armadillos, bats, and butterflies can be easily spotted during a hike. That is, if your eyes aren’t fully captivated by the Cerrado’s unique scenery, a combination of impressive topography, diverse vegetation, and special hydrography – the biome contains the headwaters and the largest portion of South American watersheds.
