More about the biome

Considered a World Natural Heritage and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, Pantanal is the largest floodplain on the planet, with nearly 210,000 sq km, 140,000 of which are within Brazilian territory. It is home to 263 species of fish, 122 species of mammals, 93 species of reptiles, 1.132 species of butterflies, and 656 species of birds. Bursting with life in every season, this region is the delight of nature lovers, from biologists and ornithologists to travelers who are simply curious about Brazilian wildlife. It is one of the best places in Brazil for wildlife observation, especially jaguars, Pantanal alligators, and beautiful birds. The dry season (July to October) is the best time to watch breathtaking concentrations of animals around lakes, marshes, and lagoons. From April to July, the receding floodwaters present a special landscape that is a favorite among photographers. From dawn to sunset, get ready to discover sceneries full of colors, wildlife, and lots of water.
